News: All the Things

5/6/17
  • I drove all the way back home last weekend to pick up my new glasses, except when I tried them on I couldn't see out of the left eye.  Turns out, they ordered the wrong prescription and now have to send them back to the manufacturer to get it replaced.  I got the frames fitted, so this time they're going to mail them to me, but I am not pleased.  I had to take time off from work and I have to pay for all that gas with zero result.  At least I got to spend time with my parents.

  • A giveaway for Dragon Adventure is up on LT3's Goodreads page.  All you have to do is leave a comment to enter: https://www.goodreads.com...giveaway---dragon-adventure-by-mell-eight

  • Two books have been posted on Goodreads: Dragon Home and Justified.  If you like putting them on your to-read list, go check them out.

  • I have been writing, but not as much as I would like.  If you read my goals postings you know I wasn't really successful in April.  I'm hoping to do better in May.  I'm still working on the same Rapunzel story, which I'm steadily picking away at.  Hopefully it will be completed soon so I can finally move on to something else.

  • What do you think of the new website design?  It was time for a change and I think it turned out well.

News: This Past Week

4/15/2017

4/15/17
  • This past week has been a slow one for writing.  I expected that to happen, given how crazy Passover can get at my house.  We had family from all over the country visiting and twenty five people at our Seder.  Now that Passover is starting to wind down, I've finally gotten a few minutes to work on my stories.

  • My Rapunzel story (which still needs a title) has grown by 1k words, most of which I've written today.  The battle is about to begin, which should be interesting to write.  I want this story to be completed already because there are so many other stories I want to be working on.  I've been getting more and more requests for the second half of Ge-Mi, so I need to return to that story, and it's already halfway through April and my goals list has been languishing.  Hopefully now that Passover is ending I'll be able to get back on track for my writing.

  • I have received the first round of edits for Dragon Home.  I've glanced through them, but because of the holiday I haven't been able to start working on them yet.  They're a lot more involved than I expected, although I don't have to rewrite anything significant, so I'm hopeful I'll be able to get them completed quickly.  The second round of edits for Justified and the edits for my Dragon's Hoard reprint could arrive any day now, and I want to get Dragon Home done beforehand so I don't get swamped.

  • Don't forget LT3's anniversary is still ongoing.  I'm retweeting, reblogging, and sharing as many of their giveaways as I see.  Of course I would like to win something--I'm hoping to be able to purchase the second half of Megan Derr's Dance series in print--but I don't want any of you to miss out either.  And maybe one of the giveaways could eventually be for one of my books.  You never know!  Plus, the big sale that's going on means you can get all of my books at a nice discount.  Make sure to check it out: https://lessthanthreepress.com/books...

News: Anniversaries and More

4/8/17
  • In case you've missed all the hullabaloo, LT3 is turning eight years old.  Every anniversary they offer a big gift of prizes, discounts, and raffles to everyone that supports them.  This year LT3 is offering 30% off of every single book in their book market, which includes print books.  This is a great time to stock up on your favorite titles, mine included.

  • The copy edits for Dragon Adventure have come and gone.  They were very straightforward so I was able to get them completed quickly.  That is the last hurdle the story had to overcome, so it will be ready for publishing on May 17th!

  • Writing has been going very well.  My Rapunzel story is just over 10k words.  I want each of the fairy tales I'm putting together to top out between 15k and 20k, so this story is getting there.  It's about to reach the big battle scene, which should be interesting to write.

  • This coming week is Passover, so things are about to get really crazy at home.  I'm going to try to fit in some writing around all the food, family, and friends--and the hours I'll be spending at synagogue--but I can't make any promises.

News: My Current To-Do List

  • The final proof for Ge-Mi: Part One is completed and Ge-Mi is therefore ready to go for its February 8th release.  You can read an excerpt and preorder for a 15% discount at LT3:
    https://lessthanthreepress.com/books...

  • LT3 is also hosting a giveaway for Ge-Mi on their Goodreads page:
    https://www.goodreads.com...giveaway---ge-mi-by-mell-eight

  • I am working on the copy edits for Dragon Soldier.  They're straightforward--fixing commas and smoothing sentences--and I hope to have it returned to LT3 this week.  With the copy edits complete, all that's left to do for this story is the final proof and it will be ready for release on March 8th.  You can also preorder for a 15% discount at LT3: https://lessthanthreepress.com/books...

  • I unfortunately will not be able to finish my story, A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, for LT3's For the Hoard call.  I really like the story, but the plot has been fighting with me.  The first draft only wanted to be 5k words--LT3 was asking for 20k--and my efforts to expand were only leading towards 10k.  I think I finally have a good idea to get the story's length up, but I won't be able to finish it by the end of the month.  I do have a few ideas for alternative ways to submit this story (maybe I'll combine it with some of my out of print books?) so I hope to have it completed soon.

Giveaway: Dragon Detective

10/16/2016

Dragon Detective comes out in a few days!  October 19th is coming so quickly.  It's time to hold a giveaway!  One e-copy of Dragon Detective to a lucky commentator.  First, though, I want to say a little about the book:
Picture
Dragon Detective is different from the previous books in the series.  Up to this point the series has been focused on Dane and Mercury.  Their quest to save the dragons and to build a family was only supposed to span two books--Dragon Consultant and Dragon Dilemma.  I added a third book--Dragon Deception--in between those two when I realized there was another story to tell.  In Dragon Detective the story leaves Dane and Mercury and instead focuses on Nickel and on Nickel's love interest (if I say the love interest's name here I'll give it away, so read the book to find out who!), but that's not the only change.

Unlike the first three books, Nickel's two--Dragon Detective and Dragon Soldier--were written as a pair.  Readers of this series will be used to each individual book having a completed plot and that there would be a significant time jump at the start of the next book in the series.  Dragon Detective doesn't end that way: it's not a cliffhanger, but it's clear the story isn't complete.  Luckily, it picks up again almost immediately in Dragon Soldier.

Each book in the series has been approximately 30 thousand words long.  As I was writing Nickel's story I realized I was going to need more than that length to tell it properly.  For the story to fit correctly into the series as a whole it needed to conform to the length so I ended up splitting Nickel's story into two.  Dragon Detective is part one and Dragon Soldier concludes in part two.

I was looking forward to writing Nickel's story from the moment the idea for his plot manifested.  He's always been one of the more interesting kits with such an interesting story.  I'm really excited for Dragon Detective to come out so his story can finally be in my readers' hands.

Dragon Detective comes out on October 19th.  There's still a few more days to pre-order the book for a 15% discount so buy your copy today:  https://lessthanthreepress.com...

It might seem like a long wait, but Dragon Soldier, the second part of Nickel's story, will come out on April 5, 2017.  I will let everyone know when it's available for pre-order.

And now, the giveaway:
  • Write a comment.  I don't care what about, just leave a comment at the end of this post.
  • For extra entries, tweet, share, or like this post on the various social media sites.  Tell me which ones you've done in your comment.
  • A winner will be chosen via random.org on: October 29, 2016.
  • Make sure you fill out the email section so I can contact you if you're the winner.  Winner will have 48 hours to respond to my congratulatory email.

News: A Few Quick Things

5/29/2016

  • I am holding a giveaway.  One copy of Dragon Dilemma to a lucky reader and one copy of Dragon Consultant to a new reader.  It's a short giveaway of only a week.  All the usual fun applies, so be sure to check it out: http://melleightsblog...giveaway-dragon-dilemma

  • Dragon Dilemma reached number eight on All Romance Ebook's bestseller list!  That's the highest any of my books have ever gotten.  I was so excited to see it there, even if only for a short time.  Thank you so much to everyone that bought a copy.

  • I have seen the cover for Magnified and it is probably my favorite cover to date.  I'll officially share it tomorrow so I don't inundate you with posts, but it's up on my site if you're interested in seeing it.  I'm super excited for this story to come out.  September 7th can't come fast enough!

  • The best news today is that I've had some time to write!  Not much, but I have put a little together in The Case of the Hopping Hare.  The beginning is starting to take shape with a cute little bunny rabbit hopping around.  The story still needs a touch more conflict so I've had to go back to planning for a bit, but I'm hopeful that the story will keep growing.

  • I have also been trying to figure out a story for LT3's Heart of Steel call, which sounds awesome.  I've got a really good idea of a plot about a knight and a dragon, but the max word limit for the call is 20k and I have a feeling my knight is going to need at least 30-40k.  I might instead save this plot for a stand alone story.  It really depends on how the story plays out as I move through the planning stages.  I'll post the story on my coming soon page as soon as I plan out more.

Dane doesn't get along with his parents. He hasn't spoken with his mother in years and he's never met his father. Somehow his mother finds out about Mercury and the kits anyway, and it's difficult to throw one's mother out when she happens to be a powerful, dangerous witch.

She isn't the only uninvited guest either, and these ones are even less likely to take no for an answer—and much more likely to leave everyone dead if they don't get what they want.

News: I'm Falling Behind

1/28/2016

1/28/16
  • I am falling way behind on my to-do list this month, but it's not entirely my fault.  I keep getting emails from LT3 with important due dates on them!  The first round of edits for Magnified ended up being very involved and took a while to return.  Soon after sending Magnified back, I received the copy edits for Dragon Deception.  I returned those and not even a day later I got the first round of edits for Dragon Detective, which I'm now working on.  Don't misunderstand, I am happy to have all of these edits to work on, but I really need to find a few moments to get Elemental Ride edited and submitted.  I only have three days left before it's due!  I'm honestly not sure I can finish in time, but I'll keep working hard the next few days and maybe I'll somehow make it.

  • Since I'm already editing Dragon Detective, which is part one of a two part story in the Supernatural Consultant universe, I really need to get part two, Dragon Soldier, completed and submitted.  There's only 10k words left to write, so I should be able to do it next month.  Soldier concludes the first arc of the series, which I would like to have done soon so I can really start working on the second arc, which begins in Dragon Spy.

  • On a happier note, the first giveaway for Dragon Deception is up!  LT3's hosting it on their Goodreads page.  Just leave a comment to sign up: https://www.goodreads.com...  I will have a subscriber exclusive giveaway for those who receive my newsletter on February 1st and I have also sent something to Magnolia Reviews, who did a wonderful job hosting a giveaway for Dragon Consultant.  I will keep everyone posted when all the giveaways go live.  Until then, feel free to preorder your copy for a 15% discount today!

  • I have also seen the first draft of the cover for Dragon Dilemma and it is beautiful!  As soon as I have the final version I'll share it with you.

News: Getting Work Done

11/23/2015

11/23/15
  • Don't forget to enter the two giveaways for Dragon Consultant.
    Mine is here:  http://melleightsblog...giveaway-dragon-consultant
    and Magnolia's is here: http://magnoliareviews...interview-and-giveaway-with-mell-eight
I'm expecting more giveaways for Dragon Consultant to start appearing soon, LT3's included.

  • I have gotten a lot of work done in Ge-Mi today.  Over 3k written and I know how part one is going to end.  I also know how part two is going to begin, so I've put together a working summary for it on my current projects page.  I literally woke up today and, after months of not touching Ge-Mi because I couldn't decide where I wanted the plot to go, I realized I knew exactly what needed to be done.  Is that weird?  Anyway, I have one more build-up scene to write and then the climax.  After I'm done with that, I want to start working on part two.  I need to have both parts completed before I can start thinking about submitting, so there's still a ways to go, but it's nice to finally be making some progress in this story again.

  • I've also been working on Kelpie Blue.  I am so close to being through with the transition scene I've been struggling with, but I realized it won't be smooth sailing after that.  I'm putting my characters into an entirely new setting with new rules to how the world works.  I need to find a way to fit in all the necessary description without losing the plot or getting boring.  It's going to be slow writing, but I expect it to be a lot of fun.

  • There are two new stories floating through my head right now that I'm trying really hard not to start writing.  They won't be short and I really don't want to add anything else to my to-do list.  One is another dragon story of sorts that is high fantasy and completely different to anything I've ever written about dragons before.  The other is a Colosseum style coming of age story with a really interesting world building aspect to it.  I want to write both and I'm afraid that if I don't start getting both stories to paper soon I'll forget important bits, but my to-do list is far too long already.  What do you think I should do?
