Dane doesn't get along with his parents. He hasn't spoken with his mother in years and he's never met his father. Somehow his mother finds out about Mercury and the kits anyway, and it's difficult to throw one's mother out when she happens to be a powerful, dangerous witch.

She isn't the only uninvited guest either, and these ones are even less likely to take no for an answer—and much more likely to leave everyone dead if they don't get what they want.

News: Release Date and More Good News

  • Magnified now has a release date: September 7, 2016.  That's not too far away!  LT3 and I have started talking about the cover and since the editing is complete Magnified will definitely be ready to go on time.  I know I've said before how excited I am for this book to come out and now with a release date my excitement is growing even more.

  • The next big thing I've learned is LT3 is going ahead with a compilation print version containing Dragon Consultant, Dragon Deception, and Dragon Dilemma.  We started talking about the cover, which is going to be awesome.  I think this print book will be released along with Dragon Dilemma in June, so make sure to look for it then.

  • I've also spoken with LT3 about starting the cover for Dragon Detective, book four of my Supernatural Consultant series.  I don't have an official release date yet, but my best guess might be this December or next January.  It depends on whether Ner Li, my story for LT3's Sharing the Season call, bumps Detective's release date back a few months.

  • I haven't heard anything about any of my other stories.  The Case of the Wandering Wolves is next on my list of submissions, so I'm hoping the first round of edits come for that soon.  Although, given that TCotWW won't be released until at least ten months from now I'm probably getting way ahead of myself.  I might see the edits for Ner Li or Elemental Ride first.  I'm also waiting on copy edits for Dragon Dilemma.  I don't expect to hear yes or no about whether LT3 accepted Justified for a while, but that is another item I'm waiting to hear about.  I'll be sure to let everyone know once I hear about any of my stories.

News: My Supernatural Consultant is Awesome

  • Dragon Deception is a hit.  It reached number 17 on All Romance e-books' best seller list!  The reviews have also been positive and everyone seems to be enjoying it.  Thank you so much to everyone who purchased a copy.

  • I have also seen the numbers for books sold last quarter.  Dragon Consultant's sales utterly shattered the previous sales record set by Stealing the Dragon.  It was amazing for me to see.  I won't know if Dragon Deception matched or beat Consultant's record for a few months, but I think it's close.

  • The entire Supernatural Consultant series is being considered for translation into other languages.  I don't know which languages or when they might be released, but I think it's really cool.  I'll keep you updated as I learn more.

  • I have been working diligently on Dragon Soldier.  There's only 4k words left to write, which at this point is basically the wrap up and the epilogue.  I'm planning to have it submitted the first week of March.  The battle scene I just finished writing is totally awesome, so I'm really looking forward to getting it started on the path to being published.

  • Next on my to-do list for this series is Dragon Adventure.  It's supposed to be a short story to bridge the two arcs of the series and therefore needs to be released before Dragon Spy, book six.  I'm also hoping to have Adventure submitted the first week of March, but there's still a lot to do.

  • I have no idea where January's gone.  I looked at the date today and realized that it's halfway through the month and I haven't written one blog posting, which isn't like me.  Keeping my readers updated on my writing and my books is important to me and I'm clearly failing this month.  I apologize.

  • There is an official release date for Dragon Dilemma, book three in my Supernatural Consultant series.  June 1, 2016.  It should be available for preorder within a few months as the editing is complete.  I'm also hoping to see the cover about the same time.

  • Dragon Consultant's sales are through the roof.  Everyone seems to be really enjoying it and are excited to read Dragon Deception when it comes out next month.  The feedback I've been receiving has been amazingly positive and I'm so happy to know people love my dragons as much as I do.  Make sure to preorder Dragon Deception before February 10, 2016 to get a 15% discount.

  • I am almost done with the first round of edits for Magnified.  I just have a final read through to do, which includes seeing if I fixed one of the big issues the editor pointed out.  It's going to take me right up to the deadline, but I should be able to get it back to LT3 on time.  Unfortunately, all the work I've had to do for Magnified has taken away from the rest of my to-do list.  I need to get the beta reader's edits completed for Elemental Ride asap so I don't miss that due date.  I wouldn't mind if it was released as a stand alone story, but I wrote it for the call and therefore want to submit it there first.  I'll have ten days to see if I can get it done once Magnified has been returned.  Wish me luck!

  • Since I'm working on Magnified right now, I'm also hoping to use that momentum to give Justified an edit.  I need to add some descriptions and smooth out the plot in a few places before I can start getting it ready for submission.

  • I've finally come up with a title for my Hanukkah story: Ner Li.  It means I have a Candle and I think it fits nicely with the story.  Thank you to everyone for your support in helping me figure out a title.  I have gone ahead and submitted it to LT3.  I know it's early, but if it sits on my computer for much longer I'll start mucking with it until I accidentally destroy it.  I really hope LT3 likes it.

Dragon Consultant
Supernatural Consultant Series 1

The FAA has been struggling with dragons attacking their planes, and hire Dane, a supernatural consultant, to look into the matter. What Dane finds in the woods is not quite the problem he expected: a group of dragon kits and their sick father.

When he learns the real reason the family was in the woods, his case only grows more dangerous, and while Dane is plenty experienced at watching his own back, taking care of baby dragons and their handsome, distracting father almost makes danger look easy.

News: Getting Work Done

  • Don't forget to enter the two giveaways for Dragon Consultant.
    Mine is here:  http://melleightsblog...giveaway-dragon-consultant
    and Magnolia's is here: http://magnoliareviews...interview-and-giveaway-with-mell-eight
I'm expecting more giveaways for Dragon Consultant to start appearing soon, LT3's included.

  • I have gotten a lot of work done in Ge-Mi today.  Over 3k written and I know how part one is going to end.  I also know how part two is going to begin, so I've put together a working summary for it on my current projects page.  I literally woke up today and, after months of not touching Ge-Mi because I couldn't decide where I wanted the plot to go, I realized I knew exactly what needed to be done.  Is that weird?  Anyway, I have one more build-up scene to write and then the climax.  After I'm done with that, I want to start working on part two.  I need to have both parts completed before I can start thinking about submitting, so there's still a ways to go, but it's nice to finally be making some progress in this story again.

  • I've also been working on Kelpie Blue.  I am so close to being through with the transition scene I've been struggling with, but I realized it won't be smooth sailing after that.  I'm putting my characters into an entirely new setting with new rules to how the world works.  I need to find a way to fit in all the necessary description without losing the plot or getting boring.  It's going to be slow writing, but I expect it to be a lot of fun.

  • There are two new stories floating through my head right now that I'm trying really hard not to start writing.  They won't be short and I really don't want to add anything else to my to-do list.  One is another dragon story of sorts that is high fantasy and completely different to anything I've ever written about dragons before.  The other is a Colosseum style coming of age story with a really interesting world building aspect to it.  I want to write both and I'm afraid that if I don't start getting both stories to paper soon I'll forget important bits, but my to-do list is far too long already.  What do you think I should do?

Giveaway: Dragon Consultant

Dragon Consultant is the first book in my new Supernatural Consultant series.  It comes out on December 9th and I am unbelievably excited.  I enjoyed working with the characters in the story so much it blossomed into a ten book series.  I've been talking about Dragon Consultant and the rest of the series a ton over the last few months and my readers can finally read it and learn why I'm so happy.

To celebrate, I'm holding a giveaway.  Three people will receive an e-copy in their preferred format.  All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me your favorite thing about dragons: the mythology, the power, a favorite book you've read with dragons in it, etc.  I want to know what makes dragons awesome for you too.
The giveaway is closed.  Congratulations to those that won.

News: Giveaways and Writing

11/18/2015

  • I stopped by Magnolia Reviews to talk about Dragon Consultant.  Maggie is also hosting a giveaway for an e-copy of Dragon Consultant.  The interview was posted last night and the giveaway started this morning.  Head on over to Maggie's site to enter the giveaway and see what I had to say.  http://magnoliareviews.weebly.com/reviews-interviews-and-more/interview-and-giveaway-with-mell-eight Maggie is just starting up her blog, so if you have any suggestions for her or are interested in being interviewed for one of your books, she would love to hear from you!

  • Keep your eyes peeled for my own giveaway of Dragon Consultant.  It's coming very soon!

  • As far as writing goes, I had a bit of a breakthrough with Kelpie Blue.  I figured out the next little bit of the plot, which will hopefully mean the story will keep growing from there.  I'm just about done writing the transition scene I was stuck on.  I really, really want at least one of the two books in this series completed this year, which means I need to get back to writing now.

  • I am currently feeling stuck on Dragon Soldier and I'm not entirely certain why.  I have a general idea of what needs to happen, but so far the book has stubbornly stayed away from letting any of what needs to happen form.  I only have 10k words left to write, yet haven't been able to start putting together the build up to the climax.  I'm starting to wonder if this book will end up being closer to 40k words in total, which would be fine, but it's a little annoying to have control ripped from me so thoroughly.  Until I figure out how to edit the story to get it back on track or how to smoothly transition from where I left off immediately into the build up, Soldier will have to remain incomplete.  This is another story I should have finished by the end of the year, but we'll see how it goes.

The State of the Dragon State

11/10/2015

My Supernatural Consultant series continues to grow.  I never expected to write this many books in one series, nor did I want to create something so involved.  Yet, that's what my characters asked for and I'm running with it very eagerly.  It's far more fun to work that way than to try to force my dragons into the box I had originally planned for them.  I still can't believe that what was once going to be a quick, three or four book series is now headed towards ten books with no signs of stopping.  What's even more amazing is the fact that I'm already seeing amazing success with readers.

How the series stands right now:
  • Dragon Consultant, book one, will be released on December 9, 2015.  It hit number 35 on ARe's bestseller list and is purportedly doing very well in pre-sales everywhere else.  I am really looking forward to Consultant finally being in my readers' hands so you can all know what I'm so excited about too. To preorder your copy today, click HERE.

  • Dragon Deception, book two, will be released on February 10, 2016.  It is also available for preorder.  All it needs is a cover and this book will be 100% ready to go.   To preorder your copy today, click HERE.

  • Dragon Dilemma, book three, is in edits.  The first round is back with LT3 and I expect to see the second round sometime near the end of the month.  Dilemma probably won't be released until May 2016 at the very earliest.

  • Dragon Detective, book four, is in LT3's hands.  They're not going to do anything with it until after Dilemma is completely edited, so I won't see it again for a while.

What I have planned next for the series:
  • Dragon Soldier, book five, is next on my to-do list for the series.  Detective ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I want to have Soldier ready to go to keep my readers from lynching me.  Given the amount of time I have, I'm not worried.

  • Dragon Adventure is next.  I'm not entirely certain if this will pan out into a full book or whether it will stay short and sweet, which is why I'm hesitating on saying it's book six.  Right now it feels more like book five and a half.  It might end up being only five thousand words (and therefore a freebie) or it could grow all the way to thirty thousand words and rightfully be called book six.  I guess I'll find out as I continue working.

  • Dragon Spy is currently listed as book six, which may change to book seven depending on how Adventure grows.  This is the book that introduces Plot B, the next phase of the series.  Plot A was completed in Soldier and any/all future books will hinge on Plot B running smoothly.

How the series is going to keep growing:
  • There's two directions I want to go with this series.  Both of which will, of course, be tied to Plot B, but they're such different directions that I'm not entirely certain how I can hook them together properly to keep the series one cohesive whole.

  1. My first idea stems from some issues raised in Dragon Dilemma, which are then reiterated in Dragon Adventure.  This idea would give a dragon that hasn't had a story written for him a stronger voice and would help tie Plot B back to things that happened during Plot A, thereby making the series feel like it all belongs together.

  2. Idea number two is to continue rolling with Plot B as far as it will take me, which can go two ways.  If the plot and characters in Dragon Spy need another book or two to tell their story, I'm not going to stop them.  This would continue with Plot B nicely, no doubt expanding on it with each successive book.  The other direction returns to the main characters from Dragon Detective and Dragon Soldier.  Writing with an established couple is always fun, but they would be working within the parameters of Plot B.

  • I honestly want to write all of it, and I don't see why I can't.  Idea one would give me the cohesiveness I was looking for while both parts of idea two give me space for the series to grow.  I just need to find a way to make them balance each other properly.  Right now that means an additional 3-6 books to write both ideas.

I can't believe how much I've been able to accomplish in this series so far and I'm even more boggled by how much more is still in the planning stage.  There is no denying that this has been and will continue to be quite an undertaking.  The important thing for me to remember is that I have to keep having fun with it.  If I don't have fun, my characters will turn dour, and my readers won't have fun either, which is unacceptable.  I hope everyone will stay with me over the next few years as each of these stories is written, submitted, edited, and finally released for you to read!

News: It's Going Well So Far

11/5/2015

11/5/15
  • The month of November has barely started and I'm already off with a bang.  The first goal on my list was to get the edits for Dragon Dilemma completed and back to the editor for round two.  I have already written the scene that needed to be added and reworked the other problem areas.  All that's left is one or two more comments to tackle and a final read through.  I should have it done in another day or two.

  • The second thing on my goals list was Elemental Ride.  I wanted to finish it this month in order to give myself enough time to edit it before the due date.  I'm happy to say I've finished writing it!  Of course, I do still need to go back and fix quite a few areas, including the ending which feels rough at the moment.  If I can get that done this week, that will leave me three whole weeks to work on whatever I want.

  • Goal three was just to write as much as I can this month.  I'm hoping that because I'm working on the edits for Dragon Dilemma, I'll return to working on the rest of the books in that series.  Dragon Spy is also continuing to grow steadily.  I hope to get a large chunk of it completed this month.  I also want to return to Dragon Soldier this month.

  • Another great thing has happened beyond my goals list.  Dragon Deception is now available for preorder at LT3!  You can get it for 15% off:  http://www.lessthanthreepress.com/books...  You can get the first two books in the series right now for a nice discount.  Dragon Consultant can be found HERE if you haven't preordered it yet.
